About SARCalNet
SAR instruments need external calibration targets to calibrate imagery and for long term monitoring of image calibration stability. Currently, most missions design their own external targets, typically a combination of natural and artificial calibration targets.
There is a known need from the SAR community to have an established network of calibration sites for SAR, similarly to the existing Radcalnet in the optical domain. The SARCalNet initiative was created within the CEOS WGCV SAR subgroup and aims for the establishment of such network (SARCalNet) which will promote the consistence dissemination of reliable information about SAR calibration sites, including basic information on targets as well their characterization continuously published on a curated database. The database should also include documentation created by the initiative containing specific requirements for calibration targets and image analysis, and sample datasets from various missions over different calibration sites in the database. In this way, SARCalNet should facilitate the use of multiple calibration sites by experts and non-experts, and also promote cross-validation between different SAR systems.
